Nations Meet on Securing Safe Blood Supplies

Economic constraints are preventing the proper screening of donated blood in some Asian countries even as the threat of contamination has increased.

Asian doctors and health workers gave an accounting of national policies to address these issues at a five-day conference on "Securing Safe Blood," organized by the Thai and Japanese Red Cross societies.

HIV and hepatitis are two common infections which can be spread by blood transfusions. In response to the AIDS crisis, the region's better-off countries have been able to tighten controls on blood donations.
