Leukocyte-Reduction Is Effective As Screening for Preventing CMV

Filtered leukocyte-reduced blood products may become accepted as an effective alternative to seronegative blood for preventing transfusion-transmitted cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in patients receiving bone marrow transplantation (BMT).

For immunocompromised patients who are CMV seronegative, primary CMV infection transmitted by transfusion is a significant problem, noted Raleigh A. Bowden, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, Washington, and colleagues.

For CMV seronegative BMT patients with CMV negative marrow donors, the transfusion of CMV seronegative blood products now is considered standard care.
