New Method Enables Large-Scale Testing for Parvovirus B19

Japanese researchers said they have established a rapid, sensitive, specific method to detect human parvovirus B19 (B19 virus) in blood donors.

An effective method to detect viremic donors currently is unavailable, noted Hiroyuki Sato and colleagues, Fukuoka Red Cross Blood Center, Fukuoka-ken, Japan ("Screening of Blood Donors for Human Parvovirus B19," Lancet, 1995;346:1237). They added that currently available methods are not practical for screening blood donors for B19 virus by polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
