PCR Inadequate in HEV Testing

Polymerase chain reaction testing may be inadequate in the diagnosis of hepatitis E virus, according to a report from New Delhi, India.

The study was presented at the VII International Symposium on Viral Hepatitis, held January 25-27, 1996 in Madrid, Spain.

Researcher Amit Aggarwal and colleagues sought to investigate the role of hepatitis E virus (HEV) in acute viral hepatitis and fulminant hepatic failure and to investigate whether serology or polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is better at diagnosing HEV.

A total of 70 patients (50 cases with acute viral hepatitis and 20 with fulminant viral hepatitis) were included in the study. ...
