"Mother-to-Child Transmission of Hepatitis C Virus: Presentation, Virological Markers and Outcome."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 46th Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, held November 3-7, 1995, in Chicago, Illinois, "To evaluate the clinical and virological features of children contaminated by vertical transmission of HCV, we studied 9 cases diagnosed on the presence of anti-HCV antibodies after 12 months and/or detectable viremia after 2 months of age. None of the mothers was coinfected by HIV. The mean age at the diagnosis was 24 months (range 4.5 to 60). All children were asymptomatic. Hepatomegaly was noted in 5.
