Technology To Save Blood During Surgery Cleared by FDA

The blood management business of Medtronic, Inc., Minneapolis, Minnesota, announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared for commercial release the Sequestra 1000, a blood processing system used to conserve blood during major surgery.

A blood processing system recovers blood shed during heart surgery, transplant surgery and as a result of trauma. The Sequestra 1000 performs autotransfusion, a process in which a patient's blood is cleansed and held for subsequent use, thereby minimizing use of banked blood and reducing concern about transmission of bloodborne diseases.
