"Detection of RNA Sequences of HTLV-I and HTLV-II in Plasma and Serum Samples of Infected Individuals."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 7th International Conference on Human Retrovirology, held October 17-21, 1995, in Paris, France, "HTLV-I and HTLV-II can be transmitted by transfusion of cellular products but, differently from other blood borne viruses, are not transmitted by transfusion of plasma or derivatives. However, HTLV sequences have been detected in archival human plasma samples from Zaire, using RT PCR (Dube et al., Virol 202:379, 1994). Thus, it was of interest to search for HTLV RNA in plasma samples from blood donors positive for HTLV. Fifteen samples had been typed as HTLV-I and 20 as HTLV-II by DNA PCR..
