Interleukin Therapy May Negate Need for Platelet Transfusions

A strategy designed to combat chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia may render the need for platelet transfusions unnecessary following subsequent chemotherapy cycles.

The protocol has involved use of recombinant human interleukin-11 (rhIL-11), a growth factor that stimulates production of platelets. Dr. Isidore Tepler, Beth Israel Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, was lead author of a rapid communication on rhIL-11 that was published in the May 1, 1996, issue of Blood (Blood 1996;87:3607-3614).
