PCR Typing Method Can Identify Specific Genotypes

A second-generation method for genotyping hepatitis C virus using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with core-gene primers allows the distinction between genotypes I/1a and II/1b.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotypes have distinct geographical distributions, and are associated with different degrees of chronic liver disease severity as well as response to interferons.
