According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 96th General Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology, held May 19-23, 1996, in New Orleans, Louisiana, "Several methods have been used for the characterization of HCV genotypes, some are based on type specific primers, probes or RFLP. The most reliable method has been DNA sequencing. Recent phylogenetic analysis of the NS5B, Core and E1 regions of HCV have shown 10 genotypes and 52 subtypes.
