Increased HGBV-C Risk Linked to Hemodialysis

Patients on maintenance hemodialysis are at increased risk for hepatitis GB virus C infection, according to a report from Japan.

"Little is known about the transmission, epidemiology and disease-inducing capacity of HGBV-C, except that it sometimes produces a fulminant non-A-E hepatitis," researcher Kazuo Masuko and colleagues wrote ("Infection with Hepatitis GB Virus C in Patients on Maintenance Hemodialysis," The New England Journal of Medicine, June 6, 1996;334(23):1485-1490).

"Since HGBV-C may be transmitted parenterally, patients on maintenance hemodialysis should be at increased risk for such infection, as they are for HCV and HBV...
