U.S. Moves To Tighten Rules on Pathogen Shipments

The U.S. government is moving to tighten regulations on the shipment of infectious diseases such Ebola virus, amid growing concerns about the potential for biological terrorism, health officials said.

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) officials have proposed a federal regulation making 40 pathogens and toxins subject to a government tracking system that would monitor sample shipments and ensure their proper disposal. The list of diseases identified by CDC researchers as having "... the potential for causing mass destruction or widespread disease in humans ..." include Ebola, bubonic plague, botulism, and anthrax.
