"Calprotectin: A Myelomonocytic Marker Protein Showing Increased Levels in Plasma and/or Stools During Infection, Inflammation or Cancer."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 22nd World Congress of Medical Technology, held June 23-28, 1996, in Oslo, Norway, "Calprotectin (L1) is a major, 36.5 kDa cytosolic protein in neutrophil granulocytes, monocytes and squamous epithelial cells of mucous membranes. It is also found in epidermal cells in most skin diseases. It has antimicrobial and antiproliferative activity against human and animal cancer cells in vitro. Large quantities of Lt are released from leucocytes to plasma during storage of blood tor a few days or within few hours after stimulation of leucocytes in vitro e.g. by endotoxin.
