Uterine Size Associated with Greater Risk of Blood Transfusion

The risk of blood transfusion increased with increasing uterine weight among women undergoing abdominal hysterectomy for uterine leiomyomas.

Susan D. Hillis, Ph.D., and colleagues, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, Georgia performed an evaluation of a large sample (446) of women undergoing abdominal hysterectomy for uterine leiomyomas ("Uterine Size and Risk of Complications among Women Undergoing Abdominal Hysterectomy for Leiomyomas," Obstetrics & Gynecology, 1996;87:539-543).
