Rapid HCV RNA Detection Method Outlined

A rapid method for detecting hepatitis C virus RNA using in situ hybridization could be useful adjunct in the characterization of the pathophysiologic features of virus infection.

A confounding factor in the detection of hepatitis C virus (HCV) by in situ hybridization techniques is the diversity of viral isolates. It has been estimated that among different viral isolates, RNA sequences can vary by as much as 21 percent. This finding has provided the basis on which viral isolates are categorized within the classification system proposed by Simmonds et al. (J Gen Virol 1993;74:2391).
