Principles Agreed Upon for HCV/HIV Compensation Plan

It has been ten years since the decision by the federal and provincial governments and the Canadian Red Cross not to use surrogate testing for hepatitis C in donor blood.

No compensation has ever been established for the hepatitis C patients of the resulting tainted blood. It has been up to 15 years without compensation for spouses and children of HIV infected Canadians.

During these periods, tens of thousands of Canadians have been infected and many have died from the hepatitis C and HIV. For these infected with hepatitis C or HIV through blood, 15 years has been a long time to wait.
