LEH May Induce Production of Macrophage Deactivating Cytokines

Liposome encapsulated hemoglobin (LEH) may suppress inflammatory cytokine production.

LEH is an experimental artificial oxygen-carrying resuscitative fluid that is being developed for use in patients with post-traumatic hypotension, noted Victoria Kwasiborski, Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, D.C., and colleagues (Artificial Cells, Blood Substitutes, and Immobilization Biotechnology, 1996;24(4):abstract 373).

Liposomes are biodegradable capsules that allow oxygen diffusion while encapsulating the hemoglobin within an aqueous environment.
