Report Announced on Genes that Protect Blood Vessels

Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Cambridge, Massachusetts, announced a paper that describes how blood flow patterns induce the expression of genes with potential atheroprotective functions.

The paper, published in the September 17, 1996, issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) (vol. 93 issue 19) was titled "Identification of Vascular Endothelial Genes Differentially Responsive to Fluid Mechanical Stimuli: Cyclooxygenase-2, Manganese Superoxide Dismutase, and Endothelial Cell Nitric Oxide Synthase are Selectively Up-Regulated by Steady Laminar Shear Stress."
