More Common Strains Present Risk; Subgroup O Not Common in Italy

The more commonly encountered strains of HIV-1 represent the real transfusion risk, indicated F. Mozzi, Centro Trasfusionale e di Immunologia dei Trapianti, Milano, Italy, and colleagues ("HIV-1 Subtype O and Transfusion Safety: Survey of Thalassemia Patients," abstract S129, Transfusion, September 1996;36(9S):33S).
