More Common Strains Present Risk; Subgroup O Not Common in Italy

In Italy, HIV-1 subtype O does not appear to be having an effect on blood safety.

The more commonly encountered strains of HIV-1 represent the real transfusion risk, indicated F. Mozzi, Centro Trasfusionale e di Immunologia dei Trapianti, Milano, Italy, and colleagues ("HIV-1 Subtype O and Transfusion Safety: Survey of Thalassemia Patients," abstract S129, Transfusion, September 1996;36(9S):33S).

They noted that recent reports of HIV-1 subtype O (sub-O) infection in Europe, coupled with the poor sensitivity in detecting anti-sub-O antibodies demonstrated by currently used donor blood screening tests has caused concern about the safety of transfused...
