Recipients of CMV Positive Organs Are at Risk for Bacteremia

Exposure to cytomegalovirus (CMV) through contaminated organs may be an independent risk factor for bacteremia in liver transplant patients.

With the aim of defining predictors of bacteremia and to assess the role of exposure to CMV as a risk factor for bacteremia in liver transplant recipients, New England Medical Center researchers analyzed data from 146 orthotopic liver transplant recipients (Matthew Falagas et al., "Exposure to Cytomegalovirus from the Donated Organ Is a Risk Factor for Bacteremia in Orthotopic Liver Transplant Recipients," Clinical Infectious Diseases, 1996;23:468-474).
