Preparation Method Caused Severe Febrile Reactions

Less febrile reactions were associated with transfusions of white blood cell (WBC)-reduced platelet concentrates (PCs) prepared by the buffy coat method, compared to the platelet-rich plasma method.

A relation between febrile reactions to platelet transfusion and high cytokine levels in PC had been found previously. Levels of cytokines, such as IL-6 related to the WBC content of PCs during storage, and the early removal of WBC, should avert such reactions, noted L.
