Elevated ALT Not Reliably Predictive of Hepatitis

Although elevated alanine aminotransferase level is widely believed to be a surrogate marker for non-A, non-B hepatitis, the presence of such levels is not sufficient reason to discard donated blood, according to a report from Argentina.

"Future studies are needed to investigate if blood donors with elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT) have a higher prevalence of infection with non-A, non-B, non-C agents compared to those with normal enzymatic values," researcher F.G. Zingale and colleagues wrote in an abstract presented to 47th annual meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, held November 8-12, 1996 in Chicago, Illinois.
