Plasma Transfusion No Longer Required for Liver Recipients

It may be possible to perform orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) without the use of fresh frozen plasma (FFP).

FFP classically is used in OLT, noted Jacques Dupont, M.D., and colleagues, Hopital Albert Calmette, Lille, France.

Dupont et al. reported that the elimination of FFP in OLT may reduce viral transmission, consequently increasing the success rate ("Liver Transplantation without the Use of Fresh Frozen Plasma," Anesthesia & Analgesia, 1996;83:681-686).
