Contract Awarded to Put Screening System in Place

The U.S. government has been following through with the public commitment to assure that America's blood supply be as safe and disease-free as medical science allows, according to Vice President Al Gore.

Using technology developed by Gen-Probe, San Diego, California, the risk of HIV infection from contaminated blood should be reduced from one in 500,000 to one in 1.4 million before the end of 1999. Currently, more than 12 million blood donations are made annually in the United States.
