OLT Patients Reinfected with Same Viral Population

Most patients who undergo liver transplantation for hepatitis B virus-related disease appear to be reinfected with the same hepatitis virus population that existed before surgery, according to a report from Germany.

Reinfection of the graft is a common problem after orthotopic liver transplantation for acute or chronic liver failure due to HBV infection.

In this study, researcher Ulrike Protzer and colleagues monitored viral markers in patients who were infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV) before and after liver transplantation, analyzed pre-core/core-mutations, and identified the viral population causing reinfection.
