NHP species used in biomedical research may be infected with various retroviruses including simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), spumaviruses (e.g., SFV), simian T-lymphotrophic viruses (STLV), and/or simian type D retroviruses. All such retroviruses cause life-long infections in NHPs, and some are transmitted through blood, breastfeeding, or sexual contact.
