Three Workers Exposed to Simian Foamy Virus

While simian foamy viruses (SFV) from nonhuman primates (NHPs) can persistently infect exposed humans, these retroviruses may or may not cause disease or be transmitted among individuals.

NHP species used in biomedical research may be infected with various retroviruses including simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), spumaviruses (e.g., SFV), simian T-lymphotrophic viruses (STLV), and/or simian type D retroviruses. All such retroviruses cause life-long infections in NHPs, and some are transmitted through blood, breastfeeding, or sexual contact.
