Blood Banks Should be Accountable to Donors

Despite the success of expanded blood donor screening, problems associated with the consequent detection, notification, and deferral of many noninfected donors have been inadequately addressed.

Extensive laboratory and clinical follow-up investigations have proven that blood donors with indeterminate results are only rarely infected with HIV, noted Michael P. Busch, M.D., Ph.D., University of California and Irwin Memorial Blood Centers, San Francisco, California, in an editorial ("To Thy [Reactive] Donors Be True!" Transfusion, February 1997;37:117-120).
