Viral Capsid Component Serves As Marker for Infection

A recombinant viral gene product has been used to establish, in different populations, the prevalence of antibodies to Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV).

Su-Fang Lin and colleagues, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, described how they identified, cloned, and expressed a KSHV-encoded protein with homology to small virion capsid components of other herpesviruses ("Identification, Expression, and Immunogenicity of Kaposi's Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus-Encoded Small Viral Capsid Antigen," Journal of Virology, April 1997;71(4):3069-3076).
