Marriage of HIV-1 and MO-MLV Sets Stage for HIV-1 Gene Therapy

Truncation of HIV-1 Env proteins facilitates the marriage of HIV-1 to virus particles of the Moloney murine leukemia virus (Mo-MLV) giving the pseudotyped vector safe and easy access to HIV-1 susceptible cells.

Research has shown that infectious pseudotypes can be formed between widely divergent retroviruses. Mo-MLV especially has been shown to form infectious hybrid virions with the Env proteins of several types of nonmurine retroviruses. However, HIV-1 has been resistant to forming infectious combinations with even its closest known nonprimate virus relatives, the visna virus, much less with Mo-MLV.
