Evaluating Risk of Retrovirus Transmission is Complicated

The best way to eliminate retrovirus transmission caused by transplanting pig organs into humans would be to make certain the donor pigs did not carry proviruses that could infect human cells, a British researcher asserted.

A genetic approach should be feasible, said Jonathan P. Stoye, National Institute for Medical Research, London, United Kingdom ("Proviruses Pose Potential Problems," Nature, March 13, 1997;386:126-127).

Stoye and others previously have described such a strategy for studies of murine leukemia viruses (Stoye & Coffin, J Virol, 1987;61:2659-2669; Frankel, Stoye et al., Genetics, 1990;124:221-236).
