Blood Does Not Seem Important in Pathogenesis of CJD

Very important differences between AIDS and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) should be kept in mind when considering blood transfusion safety.

"My own feeling is that the issue has been greatly confused by the AIDS epidemic and that a lot of the hysteria that is associated with CJD is due to that," said Dr. Robert G. Rohwer, Director, Molecular Neurovirology Unit, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Baltimore, Maryland, speaking at the Blood Safety & Screening Conference, sponsored by Cambridge Healthtech Institute, April 14-16, 1997, in McLean, Virginia.
