PCR Minipool Testing Shortens Diagnostic Period for Plasma Products

Using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology, it is possible for transfusion centers to shorten diagnostic window periods while maintaining acceptable costs, researchers from Germany reported.

For about ten years, PCR has used for detecting nucleic acids in various scientific and practical fields. PCR also can be used to search for viral genomes in transfusion medicine and to improve the safety of blood transfusion during the window period of infectivity, in which viremia is present without detectable antibodies, noted W. Tuma, GeneLab Gelsenkirchen, Germany, and colleagues.
