"Bacterial Contamination In Volunteer Blood Donations."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 97th General Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology, held May 4-8, 1997, in Miami Beach, Florida, "Bacterial contamination exists at low frequency in volunteer blood donations due to inadequate phlebotomy procedures, transient bacteremia of donors, or during manufacture of the product. Currently, FDA does not require proof of sterility prior to issuance of blood products for transfusion. Using an automated blood culture system, whole-blood (WB) and packed-red-cell (RBC) donations (within 72 hours after outdate) were cultured in standard aerobic and anaerobic media using a 5 day incubation protocol.
