According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 97th Annual Meeting of the American Gastroenterological Association, held May 11-14, 1997, in Washington, DC, "Background/Aims: The identification of a candidate gene for hereditary hemochromatosis in 83% - 100% of homozygotes has resulted in a genotypic test to identify persons with the typical missense mutation. Population screening by genotyping has the potential to reduce screening costs because of a high specificity of the genetic test.
