Numerous Issues To Be Resolved Before Screening Is Recommended

Eligible blood donors may have antibodies specific to Trypanosoma cruzi, the protozoan hemoflagellate that causes Chagas disease, or South American trypanosomiasis.

Ira A. Shulman, M.D., Los Angeles County+University of Southern California (LAC+USC) Hospital, Los Angeles, California, and colleagues assessed by questionnaire the risk of T. cruzi infection in all eligible donors at the LAC+USC Medical Center Blood Bank ("Specific Antibodies to Trypanosoma cruzi among Blood Donors in Los Angeles, California," Transfusion, July 1997;37:272-731).
