IFN-(gamma) Has Advantages Over TST in HIV+ Patients

Interferon-gamma assay may be superior to tuberculin skin testing for the detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in immunocompromised persons.

Researcher Paul J. Converse and colleagues from Baltimore, Maryland's Johns Hopkins University found the novel whole blood tuberculin interferon gamma (IFN-gamma) assay to detect more HIV positive reactors to tuberculin than traditional testing ("Comparison of a Tuberculin Interferon-gamma Assay with the Tuberculin Skin Test in High-Risk Adults: Effect of HIV Infection," Journal of Infectious Diseases, July 1997;176:144-150).
