Strict Criteria Required for Blood Transfusions in Pediatric Cerebral Malaria

The prompt transfusion of blood to anemic patients with malaria probably will reduce the occurrence of death in children with cerebral malaria.

Additionally, all conditions associated with deep coma, such as shock, hypoglycemia, and acidosis, also should be corrected, indicated B. Genton, Papua New Guinea Institute, Madang, Papua New Guinea, and colleagues ("Indicators of Fatal Outcome in Paediatric Cerebral Malaria: A Study of 134 Comatose Papua New Guinean Children," International Journal of Epidemiology, 1997;26:670-676).
