PBPC Show Better Antileukemic Activity Than Marrow Grafts

The transplantation of allogeneic peripheral blood progenitor cells may increase the desired graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) effect in patients with hematologic malignancies.

Bertram Glass, M.D., and colleagues, Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, Kiel, Germany, developed a murine model to study engraftment potential, graft-versus-host reactivity, and GVL activity of allogeneic peripheral blood progenitor cells (PBPCs) ("Allogeneic Peripheral Blood Progenitor Cell Transplantation in a Murine Model: Evidence for an Improved Graft-Versus Leukemia Effect," Blood, August 15, 1997;90:1694-1700).
