According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the First Australasian Conference on Hepatitis C, held March 16-18, 1997, in Sydney, Australia, "Current third generation anti-HCV screening EIAs are highly reliable among individuals with risk factors for or symptoms and signs of HCV infection, but the false positive rate remains a significant problem when a low risk population such as blood donors is screened.
