"Sharing of Needles and Syringes in the Expanded Program on Immunization in Bangladesh: Potential Threats, Opportunities, Costs and Benefits."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the Australian Tropical Health and Nutrition Conference, held July 17-19, 1997, in Brisbane, Australia, "Use of unsterile and shared injection equipment is common in many developing countries, since new needles and syringes are in short supply or difficult to obtain. Sharing of contaminated needles is widely considered to be a suspect vehicle of transmission for both emerged and re-emerging diseases. Every year, 10-12 million children are vaccinated with re-usable needles by more than 40,000 field workers under the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) in Bangladesh.
