IFN Response Deficiency Seen in Hepatitis C Viremic Patients

The presence of hepatitis C virus in the blood is associated with an elective defect in interferon system activation which is independent of viral genotype, French researchers suggest.

Researcher Philippe Podevin and colleagues found that the presence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the circulation is associated with a reduced capacity of mononuclear cells to respond to human recombinant interferon (alpha)2b in vitro ("Evidence for a Deficiency of Interferon Response in Mononuclear Cells from Hepatitis C Viremic Patients," Journal of Hepatology, September 1997;27:265-271).
