AIDS Through Blood Transfusion Nearly Eliminated in the Americas

While the AIDS epidemic in the Americas continues to rise, transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus through blood transfusion has been nearly eliminated through screening programs, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) reported.

The screening programs and recent breakthroughs in drugs for the treatment of the disease are the bright spots on the landscape of the epidemic which continues to spread to new areas of society, including young women and people living in rural areas.
