Scientists Develop Second Generation Lentiviral Gene Delivery System

Cell Genesys, Inc., Foster City, California, announced that company scientists, led by Luigi Naldini, M.D., Ph.D., have developed second generation lentiviral vectors for gene therapy which could enhance their application to the treatment of human disease.

The findings, published in the September 1997 issue of Nature Biotechnology, reported that researchers have significantly improved the safety profile of the lentiviral vector by eliminating the five genes associated with virulence, without reducing the efficiency of gene delivery.
