According to an abstract submitted by the author to the 26th Annual Meeting of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology, held September 18-20, 1997, in Phoenix, Arizona, "Mefloquine (MQ) is a 4-quinoline methanol derivative that is active against most blood schizonts of malaria parasite. It has been recommended for prophylaxis against malaria. The binding of mefloquine to plasma proteins from normal volunteers was compared to that from HIV infected volunteers using ultrafiltration) techniques. MQ binds extensively to plasma proteins (98%) mainly to albumin component of plasma. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and autoradiography confirm albumin as the major binding protein. ...
