"Blood Cultures for Mycobacteria. A 6-Year Experience in a University Hospital."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 37th ICAAC, held September 28 - October 1, 1997, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, "Blood cultures for detection of mycobacteremia between January-1991 and December-1996 were retrospectively reviewed. During the study period, blood cultures were processed by using the lysis-centrifugation system (ISOLATOR (C), Merck) and inoculated onto Lowenstein-Jensen, Middlebrook 7H11 for microcolonies detection and a liquid medium (MB-Check (C), BBL). A fluorochrome stain of the sediment was also performed. During the study period, 541 blood cultures were processed for mycobacterial culture. No blood culture was acid-fast stain positive.
