"Influence of Genotype on Vertical Transmission of the Hepatitis C Virus."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 37th ICAAC, held September 28 - October 1, 1997, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, "Although infections with the hepatitis C virus (HCV) can frequently be found in risk groups such as intravenous drug users (IVDU), hemophiliacs, or patients receiving blood products, the incidence of mother-to-infant transmission seems to be low. In our collective of 194 children born to 170 chronically HCV infected mothers, 11 offsprings (5.6%) became infected as shown by positive antibody tests and positive RT-PCR. Factors influencing the risk of vertical transmission are still unknown. We did not find a significant difference in HCV transmission...
