According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 37th ICAAC, held September 28 - October 1, 1997, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, "The prevalence of hepatitis C virus infection is generally not known in the Caribbean. A study was undertaken to determine hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibody prevalence in different population in the Trinidad and Tobago. A total of 2115 serum samples (haemodialysis, n=115, multiple transfusion, n=30, antenatal population, n=550, health care workers, n=101, sex workers, n=149, and others, n=1170) were tested by the ELISA method using the first generation (Ortho and Abbott) and the second generation (Abbott) kits.
