Combination of ELISAs Is Reliable, Cost-Effective

A combination of commercially available monospecific ELISAs is reliable for type-specific serodiagnosis of HIV-1 and HIV-2 infections where both viruses are endemic.

The high cost of existing differentiation assays and cross-reactivity makes the serologic distinction between HIV-1 and HIV-2 difficult, noted John N. Nkengasong, Project RETRO-CI, Abidjan, Ivory Coast, and colleagues.

Nkengasong et al. evaluated a strategy, based on a combination of monospecific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (CME) to determine its accuracy and cost-effectiveness.
