$200 Million Shortfall in Hepatitis Deal, CBC Reports

Ottawa and the Canadian provinces can't agree on who should pay $200 million of a $1.2 billion compensation package for people who contracted hepatitis C from tainted blood in the 1980s, CBC-TV's The National reported Friday, February 20, 1998.

But they have agreed that only those infected between 1986 and 1990 should get any money.

At a meeting in Ottawa earlier in the week of February 16, the health ministers agreed on the $1.2 billion total, with the Red Cross contributing about $100 million of that, CBC reported. The Canadian federal government offered to pay $700 million while the provinces offered $100 million, then raised it to $200...
