Technology Aims to Identify Infective Prion Protein

A fluorescence immunoassay has been developed for the measurement of prion protein in tissue extracts.

During the past year, progress has been made to develop tissue extraction protocols and sensitive immunoassays that can discriminate between normal and infective prion protein (designated PrPc and PrPsc, respectively), Geoff Barnard, Institute of Animal Health, Compton, United Kingdom, told participants at the fourth annual Blood Safety & Screening Conference, sponsored by Cambridge Healthtech Institute, held February 23-25, 1998, in McLean, Virginia.
